Starý mládenec a nenapravitelný sukničkář Mel (Matthew Modine) nesnáší závazky. Nakonec se přece jen nechá přemluvit svou přítelkyní Ingou ke společnému bydlení a svůj byt pronajme Ginger (Gina Gershon), bioložce z Velké Británie, která přijela do New Yorku studovat. Když ale dojde s Ingou k první hádce, vrátí se Mel do svého bytu, kde už ale bydlí Ginger, ta neochotně souhlasí s tím, že budou bydlet v jeho bytě společně.
