Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson) skládal závěrečné zkoušky na veterině, když se dozvěděl, že oba jeho rodiče zemřeli při autonehodě. Bez rodiny a bez peněz Jacob netušil jak dál, ale osud ho zavál do vlaku světového cirkusu Benzini. Hospodářská krize právě vrcholila a pro Jacoba, stejně jako pro spoustu dalších, cirkus znamenal spásu, ačkoliv to byl svět s úzce vymezenými iracionálními pravidly, s vlastním pojetím života i smrti. Jako téměř dostudovaný veterinář dostal Jacob na starost cirkusový zvěřinec včetně cirkusových běloušů krásné krasojezdkyně a hvězdy volné drezury koní Marleny (Reese Witherspoon). Marlenu k cirkusu přivedla láska k nesprávnému muži, charismatickému, ale zvrhlému a násilnickému řediteli cirkusu (Christoph Waltz). S Jacobem ji od začátku pojila nejen láska ke zvířatům, ale také vztah ke slonici Rosie, která se k cirkusu dostala jako obrovská šedivá naděje, nové číslo, které mělo cirkus zachránit před úpadkem. Jak ale s Rosie číslo nacvičit, když nebyla schopná poslechnout ani jednoduché příkazy? Pouto, které mezi touto nesourodou trojicí postupně vzniklo, bylo založeno na důvěře a lásce a nakonec se pro všechny tři stalo jedinou nadějí na přežití.
Výpravná romance z cirkusového prostředí 30. let minulého století o zakázané lásce, která se zrodí na magickém místě plném dobrodružství, zázraků a nebezpečí, vznikla podle celosvětového knižního bestselleru Sary Gruenové. Hlavní role ztvárnili držitelka Oscara Reese Witherspoon a hvězda ságy Stmívání Robert Pattinson.
