Čínská čtvrť byla druhým snímkem slavného režiséra Romana Polanského, který natočil v USA. Vzdal v něm poctu detektivkám z 30. let, řadícím se do tzv. černé série. Hlavní postavou zpočátku zdánlivě prostého příběhu je soukromý detektiv J.J. Gittes zabývající se převážně rozvodovými spory majetných párů. Jeho klientkou se stane Evelyn Mulwrayová, manželka ředitele vodní správy města Los Angeles. Po smrti Evelynina manžela Gittes pochopí, že se nejedná o obyčejnou rutinní záležitost. Postupně začíná odhalovat obrovský korupční skandál, jehož jádrem jsou pozemkové spekulace a stavba vodní přehrady. Zjistí, že bezcharakterní Noah Cross se chystá obohatit na uměle vyvolaném nedostatku vody. On a jeho pomocníci dají detektivovi jasně najevo, že šlápl na horkou půdu.
